If your kid has Sensory Processing Disorder, you are no doubt familiar with a sensory diet. Different exercises can help provide sensory input, so I’ve created a list of school-appropriate snacks designed to give a little crunch, texture or effort. Oh, and they are also fun and yummy
Top Ten Snack Ideas for Kids With
Sensory Processing Disorder
- Edamame. Kids can ‘popping’ the beans out by chomping down on the shell, and maybe sneak in a few chews on the shell when they’re done.
- Orange Juice Smoothie packed in a Thermos and sucked through a wide straw.
- Yogurt or pudding sucked through a wide straw.
- Ants On A Log. Crunchy and smooth at the same time!
- Popcorn popped on the stove in coconut oil.
- Roasted chick peas with your child’s favorite seasoning {Check out the Healthy Snacks To Go book for this one!)
- Cherry Oat Bars. Chewy and tangy at the same time.
- Fruit leathers or other dried fruits that take a while to chew.
- Beef or turkey jerky.
- Bagels. The chewier the better!

I think I’d have a hard time getting my oldest to eat most of these foods, but he really has started being willing to try more and more foods, so that’s good. It’s been nice when we don’t have to fight him to try something. (The other day, he even asked for some spinach leaves on a sandwich. We were shocked, especially when he asked for it again the next day!)

Hi there! I’m and editor for the SPD Blogger Network and I found your post on Pinterest — I see you’re already familiar with the site (thanks for sharing our badge!) and wanted to encourage you to share this post on the SPD Blogger Network — I think a lot of our readers dealing with feeding issues and looking for oral proprioceptive input ideas would enjoy it! Cheers! Karla

I agree with everything EXCEPT for the edamame. Please look into soy before advising kids to eat this stuff. Soy contains phytoestrogens that mimic the female hormone estrogen and can cause havoc with the normal hormone balance. Soy must be avoided unless it is in it’s fermented form.
